As it pertains to a holding area, it is the area extending 5 NM (9.3 km) beyond the boundary of the holding area. The height and the nature of the obstacles are taken into consideration when determining the minimum holding level usable in the holding pattern associated with the holding area.
Minimum holding level as determined by the obstacle clearance surface related to the holding area and the buffer area.
i. An irregular oscillation of an aircraft caused at the moment of stall, at very high angles of attack, and in some subsonic aircraft when flying at very high Mach numbers caused by eddy formation and separation of boundary layer.
ii. The knocking about sustained by an aircraft surface when severe turbulence or gust conditions are encountered.
iii. As used in parachuting, it means longitudinal oscillations of the body during free fall caused by holding the arms too high and the legs too straight.
